52 blog post ideas to write about

Looking back through the archives this week, I realised it's over 10 years since I published my first ever blog post (July 2013 in case you were wondering). That said, if you download my free blogging checklist, you’ll notice I originally thought it was 2014.

I had absolutely no idea what I was doing back then, and knew nothing about search engine optimisation. I simply wanted to write and share my thoughts, so set up a free WordPress site and talked about random things that came into my head - and they were random!

My first post is definitely not my best piece of work 😂

It's around 12 sentences long and doesn’t go anywhere. It's not adding any E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) and it honestly cannot be described as helpful content. But, if you’d like a laugh, here’s the link: A new lease of life

I've kept those early blog posts on my website both for nostalgia and to show readers / potential clients that I was once in the same place. I've been where you are, not having a clue what all the technical jargon meant or how to structure a blog post.

But, by getting started, I realised how much I loved writing (and I thankfully got much better at writing blog posts). Importantly, I also discovered how much I love the technical process behind writing content. So I went on webinars, I devoured articles, I learned from the experts, and I honed my skills.

I also invested a hefty amount of cash on SEO training, and I grew my outdoor website to over 17K views in 2023. Since making the decision last year to write more content on this website, views are steadily growing here too.

Even so, I still draw a blank sometimes when it comes to thinking of new blog topics. Ironically, I came up with the idea for this post while searching online for inspiration!

As I typed ‘blog post ideas’ into the search box, I stopped short and realised it would be the perfect topic to write about!

But, before we dive into my list of ideas, there’s something important to consider.

Why do you want to write a blog in the first place?

There are all kinds of reasons for writing a blog, for example:

  • Connecting with customers

  • Sharing helpful information

  • Showing your expertise

  • Sharing your passion

  • Making money online

  • Improving your writing skills

  • Building your email list

  • Writing about topics which interest you

  • Making a difference in the world

I could go on but you get the picture.

The reason it’s important to know your why is because it will help you work out what topics to cover.

If you’re writing a blog because you want to explore things that interest you, and you’re not really concerned about increasing readers or findability online, then simply write what comes into your head. A bit like my earliest blog posts.

But, if it’s to publish helpful information for your customers and share how you can help them, you need to know a few more things before you can come up with a great list of topics.

What do you need to know before you begin writing a blog?

I’m guessing you’re here because you want to write fab blog posts for other people to find and devour, which means you need to think about who will be reading the posts.

Understanding your audience is crucial:

  • Who are they?

  • What are they interested in?

  • What questions do they always ask?

  • What problems do they have?

  • What keeps them awake at night worrying?

  • How can you help them?

  • Why would they be looking at your website?

Then write useful answers, full of helpful information. Your readers will find your posts useful, or entertaining - and, if they do, the Google algorithms will love your content too.

Also ask yourself whether writing a blog post is the best way of sharing whatever it is you want to share. Maybe a video would work better, or a social media post.
